I just realized that quite a few searches that people have made leading them to my blog have been for the year in which A&P was written; I looked in my short story collection which has at the end of every piece its date put in brackets.
Now I can tell you that 1961 was the year. At least it was the year that Updike sent the lovely version we all see in to publishing.
